Mandarin Chinese Measure Words: The Definitive Beginner Guide (With Chart)

When beginning your Mandarin studies, one of the first quirks you will encounter is the measure word (量词, liàngcí), also known as a classifier.

In English, you can count most nouns directly:

  • "one cat"
  • "two books"
  • "three cars"

In Mandarin Chinese, however, placing a number directly beside a noun is grammatically impossible. You can never say "一书" (one book) or "三车" (three cars).

Instead, you must insert a specific classifier between the number and the noun:

  • 一本书 (yì běn shū): one book
  • 三辆车 (sān liàng chē): three cars

While this feels foreign at first, English actually uses the exact same concept for uncountable nouns: you say "two cups of coffee," "three sheets of paper," or "a pair of pants." Chinese simply applies this logic to every single noun in the language.

In this guide, you will learn the golden formula, the universal backup word, the essential classifiers, and the rule for the number two. To see how measure words fit into full sentences, read our Chinese grammar for beginners guide.

1. The Golden Formulas for Measure Words

There are two primary formulas you need to memorize:

Formula 1: When Counting Things

Number + Measure Word + Noun
  • 三个人 (sān gè rén): Three people
  • 五张票 (wǔ zhāng piào): Five tickets

Formula 2: When Pointing to Things ("This" or "That")

这 (zhè) / 那 (nà) + Measure Word + Noun
  • 这本书 (zhè běn shū): This book
  • 那辆车 (nà liàng chē): That car
  • 哪个人 (nǎ gè rén): Which person? (Notice the question word 哪. See our guide to Chinese question words for details).

2. The Universal Lifesaver: 个 (gè / ge)

The single most common classifier in Chinese is 个 (ge).

Native speakers use 个 for people, abstract ideas, and many physical objects:

  • 一个人 (yí gè rén): One person
  • 一个问题 (yí gè wèntí): One question / problem
  • 一个苹果 (yí gè píngguǒ): One apple

Pro Tip for Beginners: If you are speaking in real time and completely forget the specific classifier for an object, just use 个. Native speakers will understand you 100% of the time. While using the specific classifier is necessary for formal tests like the HSK 1 exam, using 个 in daily conversation is always better than freezing up!

3. The Number Two Rule: 两 (liǎng) vs. 二 (èr)

This is one of the most common traps for beginner students:

In Mandarin, there are two words for the number 2:

  • 二 (èr): Used for counting sequentially (1, 2, 3: 一, 二, 三), phone numbers, dates, and math.
  • 两 (liǎng): Used whenever you are measuring or quantifying things with a measure word.

Whenever you pair the number two with a classifier, you must always use 两, never 二:

  • Correct: 两个人 (liǎng gè rén) = two people
  • Incorrect: 二个人 (èr gè rén - Incorrect: Always use 两 when counting with a classifier)
  • Correct: 两本书 (liǎng běn shū) = two books
  • Incorrect: 二本书 (èr běn shū - Incorrect: Always use 两 when counting with a classifier)

4. The Top 15 Must-Know Chinese Measure Words

Chinese classifiers are logical. They are grouped based on the shape, function, or nature of the object. Learn them by category:

Category 1: Flat Objects -> 张 (zhāng)

Used for anything with a flat surface (paper, tickets, tables, beds, cards):

  • 一张纸 (yì zhāng zhǐ) = one sheet of paper
  • 一张桌子 (yì zhāng zhuōzi) = one table
  • 两张电影票 (liǎng zhāng diànyǐng piào) = two movie tickets

Category 2: Bound Volumes -> 本 (běn)

Used for anything with bound pages (books, magazines, passports):

  • 一本书 (yì běn shū) = one book
  • 一本词典 (yì běn cídiǎn) = one dictionary
  • 一本护照 (yì běn hùzhào) = one passport

Category 3: Animals and Single Parts of Pairs -> 只 (zhī)

Used for most animals, birds, and one half of a bodily pair:

  • 一只猫 (yì zhī māo) = one cat
  • 一只狗 (yì zhī gǒu) = one dog (条 can also be used for dogs)
  • 一只手 (yì zhī shǒu) = one hand

Category 4: Long, Flexible Objects -> 条 (tiáo)

Used for long, winding, or flexible items:

  • 一条鱼 (yì tiáo yú) = one fish
  • 一条裤子 (yì tiáo kùzi) = one pair of pants
  • 一条路 (yì tiáo lù) = one road

Category 5: Vehicles with Wheels -> 辆 (liàng)

Used for bicycles, cars, and buses:

  • 一辆自行车 (yí liàng zìxíngchē) = one bicycle
  • 一辆出租车 (yí liàng chūzūchē) = one taxi

Category 6: Machines and Appliances -> 台 (tái)

Used for computers, televisions, and electrical appliances:

  • 一台电脑 (yì tái diànnǎo) = one computer
  • 一台电视 (yì tái diànshì) = one TV

Category 7: Clothing and Matters -> 件 (jiàn)

Used for tops, coats, clothing items, and matters or events:

  • 一件衣服 (yí jiàn yīfu) = one piece of clothing
  • 一件衬衫 (yí jiàn chènshān) = one shirt
  • 一件事 (yí jiàn shì) = one matter / event

Category 8: Pairs of Items -> 双 (shuāng)

Used for items that naturally come in pairs:

  • 一双鞋 (yì shuāng xié) = a pair of shoes
  • 一双筷子 (yì shuāng kuàizi) = a pair of chopsticks

Category 9: Containers for Food and Drink

Just like in English, container words double as classifiers:

  • 杯 (bēi): 一杯咖啡 (yì bēi kāfēi) = a cup of coffee
  • 瓶 (píng): 两瓶啤酒 (liǎng píng píjiǔ) = two bottles of beer
  • 碗 (wǎn): 一碗米饭 (yì wǎn mǐfàn) = a bowl of rice

6. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I ever omit a measure word?

Yes, but only in a few fixed expressions and standard units of measurement that act as their own classifiers, such as:

  • 天 (tiān - day): 三天 (sān tiān) = three days (never say 三个天)
  • 年 (nián - year): 两年 (liǎng nián) = two years (never say 两个年)
  • 元 / 块 (yuán / kuài - dollar/RMB): 五块 (wǔ kuài) = five yuan

However, for units of time like "month" (月, yuè) and "week" (星期, xīngqī), you must use 个:

  • 两个月 (liǎng gè yuè) = two months
  • 三个星期 (sān gè xīngqī) = three weeks

Why do dogs take both 只 and 条?

Traditionally, 条 (tiáo) is used for dogs because their bodies are long and flexible (一条狗). However, in modern colloquial Chinese, many native speakers treat dogs like any other pet animal and use 只 (一只狗). Both are widely accepted.
