或者 (huòzhě) vs. 还是 (háishì): How to Say "Or" in Chinese

In English, the word "or" does double duty with zero distinction:

  • "Would you like tea or coffee?" (Question)
  • "I can meet you on Saturday or Sunday." (Statement)

In Mandarin Chinese, however, using the same word for both sentences is a major grammatical error. Chinese separates "or" strictly based on whether you are asking a choice question or making a declarative statement:

Use 还是 (háishì) when offering a choice in a question (Option A or Option B?).
Use 或者 (huòzhě) when expressing alternatives in a statement (Either Option A or Option B).

Mastering this distinction is an essential milestone on the HSK 2 and HSK 3 exams. In this guide, we break down the formulas, real-life dialogues, and the tricky "indirect question" exception that trips up even upper-intermediate students.

For an overview of how questions work in Chinese, see our guide to Mandarin question words.

1. Quick Decision Rules

+-------------------------------------------------------------+
                    HOW TO SAY "OR"

还是 (háishì) -> QUESTIONS [Tea or coffee?]
或者 (huòzhě) -> STATEMENTS [Tea or coffee is fine]
+-------------------------------------------------------------+

Compare these two sentences:

  • 你喝茶还是喝咖啡?
    • Pinyin: Nǐ hē chá háishì hē kāfēi?
    • English: Do you drink tea or coffee? (Question -> 还是)
  • 我喝茶或者咖啡都可以。
    • Pinyin: Wǒ hē chá huòzhě kāfēi dōu kěyǐ.
    • English: I can drink either tea or coffee. (Statement -> 或者)
    • Modal Verb Note: Notice the permission/feasibility marker 可以. Learn more in our modal verbs guide on 会, 能, and 可以.

2. 还是 (háishì): Choice Questions

When you ask someone to choose between two or more possibilities, insert 还是 between the options.

  • Formula: Option A + 还是 + Option B?

Detailed Sentence Examples:

  1. 你今天去还是明天去?
    • Pinyin: Nǐ jīntiān qù háishì míngtiān qù?
    • English: Are you going today or tomorrow?
  2. 你想坐地铁还是坐出租车?
    • Pinyin: Nǐ xiǎng zuò dìtiě háishì zuò chūzūchē?
    • English: Do you want to take the subway or take a taxi?
  3. 这是你的书还是他的书?
    • Pinyin: Zhè shì nǐ de shū háishì tā de shū?
    • English: Is this your book or his book?
    • Particle Reference: Notice the possessive particle 的. Learn more in our 3 "De" particles guide.

Bonus Meaning of 还是: "Still" or "Had Better"

Aside from meaning "or," 还是 has two other high-frequency uses in Mandarin:

  1. Still (adverb):
    • 虽然下雨了,但他还是去跑步了。
    • Pinyin: Suīrán xià yǔ le, dàn tā háishì qù pǎobù le.
    • English: Although it rained, he still went jogging.
  2. Had Better / Make a Decision:
    • 天气太冷了,我们还是回家吧。
    • Pinyin: Tiānqì tài lěng le, wǒmen háishì huíjiā ba.
    • English: The weather is too cold, we had better go home.

3. 或者 (huòzhě): Alternatives in Statements

When you are simply stating that multiple options are available, acceptable, or possible without asking the listener to make an immediate choice, use 或者.

  • Formula: Option A + 或者 + Option B

Detailed Sentence Examples:

  1. 周末我常常在家看书或者听音乐。
    • Pinyin: Zhōumò wǒ chángcháng zài jiā kàn shū huòzhě tīng yīnyuè.
    • English: On weekends, I often read books or listen to music at home.
  2. 你可以给我打电话,或者发电子邮件。
    • Pinyin: Nǐ kěyǐ gěi wǒ dǎ diànhuà, huòzhě fā diànzǐ yóujiàn.
    • English: You can call me on the phone, or send an email.
  3. 我们下周六或者周日见面都可以。
    • Pinyin: Wǒmen xià zhōuliù huòzhě zhōurì jiànmiàn dōu kěyǐ.
    • English: Meeting next Saturday or Sunday both work for me.

The Paired Pattern: 或者...或者... (Either... or...)

You can also place 或者 before each option for parallel emphasis:

  • 或者你来我家,或者我去你家。
    • Pinyin: Huòzhě nǐ lái wǒ jiā, huòzhě wǒ qù nǐ jiā.
    • English: Either you come to my house, or I go to yours.

4. The Critical Exception: Indirect Questions

This is the number one reason intermediate students lose points on the HSK 3 and HSK 4 exams:

What happens if a sentence ends with a period, but contains an embedded, indirect question?

Consider this sentence:

"I do not know whether he is coming today or tomorrow."

At the sentence level, this is a statement (it ends with a period, not a question mark). However, the clause inside ("is he coming today or tomorrow") is an inquiry.

In Mandarin, whenever a statement expresses uncertainty, doubt, or an inquiry using verbs like:

  • 知道 (zhīdào, to know)
  • 决定 (juédìng, to decide)
  • 清楚 (qīngchu, to be clear)
  • 告诉 (gàosu, to tell)

You must still use 还是, NOT 或者!

Detailed Indirect Question Examples:

  1. 我不知道他喜欢喝茶还是喝咖啡。
    • Pinyin: Wǒ bù zhīdào tā xǐhuan hē chá háishì hē kāfēi.
    • English: I do not know whether he likes tea or coffee.
    • Why it uses 还是: The clause expresses unknown choices (indirect inquiry).
  2. 我们还没决定去北京还是去上海。
    • Pinyin: Wǒmen hái méi juédìng qù Běijīng háishì qù Shànghǎi.
    • English: We have not decided yet whether to go to Beijing or Shanghai.
  3. 请告诉我,你想买黑色的还是白色的。
    • Pinyin: Qǐng gàosu wǒ, nǐ xiǎng mǎi hēisè de háishì báisè de.
    • English: Please tell me whether you want to buy the black one or the white one.

7. Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Using 或者 in a Question

  • Wrong: 你喜欢猫或者狗?
    • Pinyin: Nǐ xǐhuan māo huòzhě gǒu? (Incorrect)
    • Why it fails: In a choice question, you must use 还是.
  • Correct: 你喜欢猫还是狗?
    • Pinyin: Nǐ xǐhuan māo háishì gǒu?
    • English: Do you like cats or dogs?

Mistake 2: Using 还是 in a Plain Statement

  • Wrong: 周末我去图书馆还是去超市。
    • Pinyin: Zhōumò wǒ qù túshūguǎn háishì qù chāoshì. (Incorrect)
    • Why it fails: This is a plain factual statement, not an inquiry.
  • Correct: 周末我去图书馆或者去超市。
    • Pinyin: Zhōumò wǒ qù túshūguǎn huòzhě qù chāoshì.
    • English: On weekends, I go to the library or to the supermarket.

Mistake 3: Using 或者 in Indirect Questions

  • Wrong: 我不知道他去北京或者上海。
    • Pinyin: Wǒ bù zhīdào tā qù Běijīng huòzhě Shànghǎi. (Incorrect)
    • Why it fails: "Do not know" introduces an indirect question, requiring 还是.
  • Correct: 我不知道他去北京还是上海。
    • Pinyin: Wǒ bù zhīdào tā qù Běijīng háishì Shànghǎi.
    • English: I do not know whether he is going to Beijing or Shanghai.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put 吗 at the end of a 还是 question?

No! Just like with question words like 什么 or 谁, 还是 already turns the sentence into a question. Adding 吗 is redundant and incorrect:

  • Wrong: 你喝茶还是咖啡吗?
  • Correct: 你喝茶还是咖啡? (Nǐ hē chá háishì kāfēi?) = Do you drink tea or coffee?
