Gang vs Gangcai (刚 vs 刚才): How to Say 'Just' in Chinese
The answer to gang vs gangcai is about word type. 刚 (gāng) is an adverb that goes before the verb and means "just", a short time ago in the speaker's eyes. 刚才 (gāngcái) is a time word meaning "just now, a few minutes ago". 刚才 can go before the subject, take 的 and work with 了 and 没. 刚 can't.
Both words are HSK 3, and learners mix them up because English uses "just" for both. This guide covers word order, 了 and 没, 刚来三天, 刚刚, 刚…就… and 刚好, with a table, dialogues, common mistakes and a quiz. For the other HSK 3 patterns, see our HSK 3 grammar list summary.
Gang vs Gangcai: The Quick Answer
Here is the simplest way to feel the difference:
- 刚 tells you about the action. It is fresh, it only just happened.
- 刚才 tells you about the time. It works like 今天, 昨天 or 现在, but it points to a few minutes ago.
Compare:
- 他刚走。
- Pinyin: Tā gāng zǒu.
- English: He's just left.
- 他刚才还在这儿。
- Pinyin: Tā gāngcái hái zài zhèr.
- English: He was still here a minute ago.
A handy test: if you could put 昨天 in the same slot and the sentence still works grammatically, you need 刚才. 昨天的事 works, so 刚才的事 works. 昨天我… works, so 刚才我… works. But "刚的事" and "刚我…" are not Chinese, which tells you 刚 is a different kind of word.
刚 (gāng): "Just" as an Adverb Before the Verb
Subject + 刚 + Verb (+ Object)
刚 sits in the same place as other adverbs like 也, 都 and 还: after the subject, right before the verb.
- 我刚下班,有点儿累。
- Pinyin: Wǒ gāng xiàbān, yǒudiǎnr lèi.
- English: I've just finished work, and I'm a bit tired.
- 饭刚做好,快来吃吧。
- Pinyin: Fàn gāng zuòhǎo, kuài lái chī ba.
- English: Dinner's just ready. Come and eat.
With 刚, "Just" Is Relative
刚 does not mean "a few minutes ago". It means "recently, as the speaker sees it". If you moved two weeks ago, you can still say 我刚搬家. If you started a new job last month, 我刚换工作 is fine.
- 我刚搬到这个城市,还没有朋友。
- Pinyin: Wǒ gāng bāndào zhège chéngshì, hái méiyǒu péngyou.
- English: I've just moved to this city and don't have any friends yet.
- 她刚开始学中文。
- Pinyin: Tā gāng kāishǐ xué Zhōngwén.
- English: She's just started learning Chinese.
刚才 could not replace 刚 in either sentence. 刚才 really is a few minutes ago, so 我刚才搬到这个城市 would mean you arrived with your boxes this afternoon.
刚才 (gāngcái): How to Say "Just Now" in Chinese
刚才 + Subject + Verb or Subject + 刚才 + Verb
刚才 is a time noun. Like other time words, it can go before or after the subject. It usually means a few minutes ago, an hour or two at most.
- 刚才你妈妈打电话来了。
- Pinyin: Gāngcái nǐ māma dǎ diànhuà lái le.
- English: Your mom called just now.
- 我刚才在路上看见小李了。
- Pinyin: Wǒ gāngcái zài lùshang kànjiàn Xiǎo Lǐ le.
- English: I saw Xiao Li on the street just now.
刚才 + 的 + Noun: 刚才的事
Since 刚才 is a noun, it can describe another noun, just like 昨天的报纸 (yesterday's paper).
- 刚才的事,你别生气了。
- Pinyin: Gāngcái de shì, nǐ bié shēngqì le.
- English: Don't be angry about what happened just now.
- 刚才那个人是谁?
- Pinyin: Gāngcái nàge rén shì shéi?
- English: Who was that person just now?
In the second sentence, 那个 does the linking, so 的 is not needed. You can't say "刚的事" at all.
刚才 After 比 and Other Prepositions
A noun can follow a preposition, so 刚才 can too:
- 我现在比刚才舒服多了。
- Pinyin: Wǒ xiànzài bǐ gāngcái shūfu duō le.
- English: I feel much better now than I did a moment ago.
Using 了 with 刚 and 刚才
With 刚才, 了 is completely normal. 刚才 is just a time word, so the sentence behaves like any sentence about the past.
- 刚才下了一场大雨。
- Pinyin: Gāngcái xià le yì cháng dà yǔ.
- English: There was a heavy shower a little while ago.
- 我刚才吃了两个包子,现在不饿。
- Pinyin: Wǒ gāngcái chī le liǎng ge bāozi, xiànzài bú è.
- English: I had two baozi a moment ago, so I'm not hungry.
With 刚, you usually leave 了 out. 刚 already tells the listener the action is done and recent, so 了 has no job left to do.
- 我刚到。
- Pinyin: Wǒ gāng dào.
- English: I've just arrived.
To be honest, native speakers do sometimes put 了 right after the verb in a 刚 sentence, especially with a number and an object: 他刚买了一辆新车. That's fine. What sounds wrong is 了 at the very end, as in "我刚到了". The safe habit: 刚 without 了. For the bigger picture, read our guide to the particle 了.
Negation: 刚才没, Not 刚没
To say something didn't happen a moment ago, use 刚才 + 没:
- 对不起,我刚才没听见。
- Pinyin: Duìbuqǐ, wǒ gāngcái méi tīngjiàn.
- English: Sorry, I didn't hear you just now.
- 刚才你怎么没接电话?
- Pinyin: Gāngcái nǐ zěnme méi jiē diànhuà?
- English: Why didn't you answer the phone just now?
"刚没" doesn't work. 刚 means "this has just happened", and you can't say that about something that didn't happen. If you want to deny that something is recent, use 不是刚:
- 我不是刚到,我已经等了二十分钟了。
- Pinyin: Wǒ bú shì gāng dào, wǒ yǐjīng děng le èrshí fēnzhōng le.
- English: I didn't just get here. I've been waiting for twenty minutes.
If 不 and 没 still trip you up, our article on 不 vs. 没 goes through the rules.
刚 + Duration: 刚来三天
Subject + 刚 + Verb + Length of Time
Put a length of time after the verb and 刚 means "only (that long) so far". The speaker feels the time is short.
- 我刚来三天,还不知道超市在哪儿。
- Pinyin: Wǒ gāng lái sān tiān, hái bù zhīdào chāoshì zài nǎr.
- English: I've only been here three days, and I still don't know where the supermarket is.
- 他刚走五分钟,你给他打个电话吧。
- Pinyin: Tā gāng zǒu wǔ fēnzhōng, nǐ gěi tā dǎ ge diànhuà ba.
- English: He only left five minutes ago. Give him a call.
刚才 can't do this. "刚才来三天" makes no sense, because 刚才 is already a point in time. Our guide to duration of time in Chinese explains where time lengths go in a sentence.
刚刚 (gānggāng): "Gang Gang" in Chinese
刚刚 has two uses, and the second one is why learners get confused.
1. Like 刚, but a Little Stronger
Before the verb, 刚刚 means "only just", "this very moment".
- 电影刚刚开始。
- Pinyin: Diànyǐng gānggāng kāishǐ.
- English: The film has only just started.
2. Like 刚才 in Everyday Speech
In real conversation, many people use 刚刚 as a time word, even at the start of a sentence:
- 刚刚有人敲门。
- Pinyin: Gānggāng yǒu rén qiāo mén.
- English: Someone knocked on the door just now.
Textbooks don't teach this use, but you'll hear it all the time, especially from younger speakers. In your own writing, 刚才 is still the clearer choice.
刚…就…: "Just Did A When B Happened"
Subject + 刚 + Verb 1,(Subject) + 就 + Verb 2
This pattern says the second thing happened almost straight after the first. It is very close to 一…就….
- 我刚到家,就下雨了。
- Pinyin: Wǒ gāng dào jiā, jiù xià yǔ le.
- English: I'd only just got home when it started to rain.
- 他刚毕业就找到了工作。
- Pinyin: Tā gāng bìyè jiù zhǎodào le gōngzuò.
- English: He found a job right after graduating.
Notice that 了 shows up here, but in the 就 part, not after the verb that follows 刚. Only 刚 works in this pattern, never 刚才. For the related pattern, see 一…就… (as soon as).
刚好 (gānghǎo): "Just Right" and "Happen To"
刚好 looks like it belongs here, but it is not about time. It means "just right", "exactly" or "happen to", much like 正好.
- 这条裤子我穿着刚好。
- Pinyin: Zhè tiáo kùzi wǒ chuānzhe gānghǎo.
- English: These trousers fit me just right.
- 我刚好路过,就进来看看。
- Pinyin: Wǒ gānghǎo lùguò, jiù jìnlái kànkan.
- English: I happened to be passing by, so I popped in.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 刚 and 刚才?
刚 (gāng) is an adverb that goes right before the verb. It says an action happened a short time ago, and that can mean minutes or weeks. 刚才 (gāngcái) is a time word meaning "a moment ago". It can go before the subject, take 的 and be negated with 没.
Can I use 了 with 刚?
Usually you leave 了 out after 刚, because 刚 already tells the listener the action is done. 我刚到 is natural, while 我刚到了 sounds wrong. With 刚才 you can use 了 freely, as in 我刚才吃了一个包子.
How do you say "just now" in Chinese?
Use 刚才 (gāngcái) for something that happened a few minutes ago, as in 刚才有人找你 (someone was looking for you just now). In casual speech, many people also use 刚刚 (gānggāng) this way.
Why can't I say 刚没?
刚 marks something that has just happened, so it does not combine with 没. To say something didn't happen a moment ago, use 刚才没, as in 我刚才没听见. To deny that something is recent, say 不是刚, as in 我不是刚到.
What does 刚好 mean?
刚好 (gānghǎo) means "just right" or "happen to". 这双鞋刚好 means the shoes fit just right, and 我刚好路过 means I happened to be passing by. It is not about time.
