Yi Jiu Chinese Grammar: 一…就… for "As Soon As"
In yi jiu Chinese grammar, 一…就… (yī…jiù) means "as soon as": the second action happens right after the first one. The basic pattern is Subject + 一 + Action 1 + 就 + Action 2. For example, 我一到家就给你打电话 means "I'll call you as soon as I get home." The same pattern can also mean "whenever."
一…就… is an HSK 3 pattern and one of the most useful at that level. This article covers both meanings, where the subject goes, how to say 一, and how the pattern differs from 就 alone and from 刚…就…, with dialogues, mistakes and a quiz. For the full list of patterns at this level, see our HSK 3 grammar list.
Yi Jiu Chinese Grammar: The Quick Answer
The pattern has two parts:
- 一 (yī) marks the first action, the trigger.
- 就 (jiù) marks the second action, the result that follows straight away.
Subject + 一 + Verb 1,就 + Verb 2
- 我一到家就给你打电话。
- Pinyin: Wǒ yí dào jiā jiù gěi nǐ dǎ diànhuà.
- English: I'll call you as soon as I get home.
An easy way to remember it: 一 is the number "one." One step, and right away the next. The pattern has no tense of its own. The time comes from context, or from 了 at the end for past events.
How to Say "As Soon As" in Chinese
The most common use describes one moment: Action 1 happens, and Action 2 follows immediately.
Subject + 一 + Verb 1,就 + Verb 2
- 她一下班就去接孩子了。
- Pinyin: Tā yí xiàbān jiù qù jiē háizi le.
- English: She went to pick up the kids as soon as she finished work.
- 我一看菜单就知道这家店很贵。
- Pinyin: Wǒ yí kàn càidān jiù zhīdào zhè jiā diàn hěn guì.
- English: One look at the menu and I knew this place was expensive.
Only the 了 at the end of the first sentence tells you it already happened. Without it, 她一下班就去接孩子 would describe what she does every day. For more on that little word, see our guide to the particle 了.
"Once You Try, It Works": 一学就会
A common short form puts two single verbs together to say something is so easy that one try is enough.
- 这个菜很简单,你一学就会。
- Pinyin: Zhège cài hěn jiǎndān, nǐ yì xué jiù huì.
- English: This dish is really easy. You'll get it the first time you try.
You will also hear 一看就知道 ("you can tell at a glance") all the time.
Using 一…就… for "Whenever" in Chinese
The second use is about habits and reactions. Every time A happens, B happens too.
Subject + 一 + Verb / Adjective 1,就 + Verb 2
- 我一紧张就说不出话。
- Pinyin: Wǒ yì jǐnzhāng jiù shuō bu chū huà.
- English: Whenever I get nervous, I can't get a word out.
- 他一喝酒就脸红。
- Pinyin: Tā yì hē jiǔ jiù liǎn hóng.
- English: His face goes red whenever he drinks.
The first part can be a feeling, like 紧张 (nervous) or 累 (tired). Results like 说不出 are potential complements, covered in our guide to potential complements.
So is it "as soon as" or "whenever"? Sometimes the sentence alone doesn't say, and native speakers don't worry about it. 他一回家就玩手机 can describe one evening or every evening. 每次 (every time) or 总是 (always) makes the habit clear, and 了 usually points to one event.
Where Does the Subject Go in the 一…就… Sentence Pattern?
Both 一 and 就 are adverbs here, and Chinese adverbs sit after the subject and before the verb. That one rule explains this whole section.
Same Subject
When one person does both actions, say the subject once, at the start.
Subject + 一 + Verb 1 + 就 + Verb 2
- 他一回家就打开电脑。
- Pinyin: Tā yì huí jiā jiù dǎkāi diànnǎo.
- English: He turns on his computer as soon as he gets home.
You may also hear 一回家,他就打开电脑, with the subject in the second half. That is fine. What you cannot do is put the subject between 一 and the verb.
Different Subjects
With two different subjects, each one comes before its own adverb. So the second subject goes before 就.
Subject A + 一 + Verb 1,Subject B + 就 + Verb 2
- 老师一进教室,学生们就安静了。
- Pinyin: Lǎoshī yí jìn jiàoshì, xuéshengmen jiù ānjìng le.
- English: The moment the teacher walked into the classroom, the students went quiet.
- 我一说完,大家就笑了。
- Pinyin: Wǒ yì shuō wán, dàjiā jiù xiào le.
- English: As soon as I finished speaking, everyone laughed.
With one subject, the comma is optional. With two subjects, a comma is normal.
How to Pronounce 一 in 一…就…
一 is first tone (yī) on its own. Here it sits before a verb, so it follows the usual tone change rules:
| Next syllable | 一 is read as | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1st tone | yì | 一听 (yì tīng), 一吃 (yì chī) |
| 2nd tone | yì | 一回家 (yì huí jiā), 一来 (yì lái) |
| 3rd tone | yì | 一想 (yì xiǎng), 一紧张 (yì jǐnzhāng) |
| 4th tone | yí | 一到 (yí dào), 一看 (yí kàn), 一下班 (yí xiàbān) |
就 is always jiù. It is the same rule you already use for 一个 (yí ge) and 一起 (yìqǐ).
一…就… vs. 就 Alone
就 can link two actions without 一. On its own, it simply means "then" or "after that." Adding 一 makes the timing tighter and more urgent.
- 我下了班就去。
- Pinyin: Wǒ xià le bān jiù qù.
- English: I'll go after work.
- 我一下班就去。
- Pinyin: Wǒ yí xiàbān jiù qù.
- English: I'll go the minute I finish work.
Both are correct. The second one promises no delay at all.
就 alone has another job too. It can say something happened earlier than expected, as in 他七点就到了 (he was already there by seven). That is the opposite of 才, which our article on 就 vs. 才 explains.
一…就… vs. 刚…就…
刚…就… (gāng…jiù) looks similar but feels different. It means "had only just done A when B happened," and B is often a small surprise.
- 我刚到家,就下雨了。
- Pinyin: Wǒ gāng dào jiā, jiù xià yǔ le.
- English: I'd only just got home when it started raining.
- 我刚坐下,电话就响了。
- Pinyin: Wǒ gāng zuòxià, diànhuà jiù xiǎng le.
- English: I'd just sat down when the phone rang.
The main limit: 刚…就… is for one event that already happened, not for habits or plans. 我一紧张就说不出话 works, but "我刚紧张就说不出话" does not. For a single past event, native speakers sometimes use either pattern with little change in meaning. For more on 刚 itself, see our guide to 刚 vs. 刚才.
一…就… vs. 刚…就… vs. 就: Comparison Table
| Pattern | Meaning | What it stresses | Example | English |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 一…就… (one event) | as soon as | B follows A with no delay | 我一到家就给你打电话。 | I'll call you as soon as I get home. |
| 一…就… (habit) | whenever | A always brings B | 他一喝酒就脸红。 | His face goes red whenever he drinks. |
| 刚…就… | had just… when | B came sooner than expected, past only | 我刚坐下,电话就响了。 | I'd just sat down when the phone rang. |
| 就 (linking) | then, after that | simple order of events | 我吃完饭就走。 | I'll leave after I eat. |
