HSK 5 Study Guide: Vocabulary, Grammar and an 18-Week Plan (New HSK 3.0)
HSK 5 is the level where many learners stall. You can already hold everyday conversations, but newspaper articles, formal emails and work documents still feel out of reach. HSK 5 closes that gap. It is less about new sentence patterns and more about formal written Chinese, longer texts and reading speed.
This guide covers what HSK 5 asks of you under the New HSK 3.0 word lists, which words and grammar to focus on, how to practice reading and listening at length, and a realistic 18-week plan. If you are coming straight from the previous level, the HSK 4 study guide is the place to check you have the foundations.
Who HSK 5 Is For and What You Can Do at This Level
HSK 5 is for learners who are comfortable with HSK 4 and want to use Chinese for study, work or serious reading. At this level you should be able to:
- Read articles of several paragraphs on social, business, science and cultural topics and follow the argument.
- Understand formal connectors that show cause, purpose and conclusion (从而, 以便, 由此可见).
- Follow longer conversations, interviews and short talks on familiar topics.
- Write a structured paragraph that states an opinion and supports it.
- Recognize common four-character idioms (成语) and use a few of them correctly.
How HSK 5 Differs from HSK 4
Vocabulary grows again. In the New HSK 3.0 lists used by the Learn Chinese app, HSK 5 adds 1,071 new words, for a total of 4,316. It introduces roughly 300 new characters, for about 1,500 in total.
Formal register. HSK 4 connectors like 无论 and 既然 are common in speech. HSK 5 adds words mainly found in writing: 因而 instead of 所以, 难以 instead of 很难, 其 instead of 他的 or 它的, and verbs like 加以 that only appear in formal sentences.
Longer texts. Reading at HSK 5 means following a whole article, not a single paragraph. Reading speed, skimming and spotting the main idea become real skills to practice.
Abstract topics. Expect vocabulary about society, the economy, the environment and technology: 竞争 (competition), 污染 (pollution), 贸易 (trade).
A note on HSK 2.0 vs HSK 3.0
The HSK is in transition between the older HSK 2.0 format and the New HSK 3.0 standard. The word lists, sections and paper design differ between the two, and the version on offer can depend on your test center and date. Check the current format, timing and registration details for your level on the official site, chinesetest.cn, before you plan your final weeks.
How to prepare either way: vocabulary, reading speed and listening stamina help in both versions. If your exam is soon and uses the 2.0 paper, use that list and its sample papers for the final month. If not, follow the 3.0 list as this guide does.
Vocabulary Strategy for HSK 5
1. Pair formal words with their everyday equivalents
Many HSK 5 words are formal versions of words you already know. Learning them in pairs saves time and teaches you when to use each:
- 因而 (formal) ↔ 所以 (everyday): therefore
- 难以 ↔ 很难: hard to
- 尽管 ↔ 虽然: although
- 缺乏 ↔ 没有 / 不够: to lack
- 依旧 ↔ 还是: still, as before
2. Learn noun–verb collocations
Formal Chinese relies on fixed pairings. Learn 加强沟通 (to improve communication), 控制情绪 (to control one's emotions), 分析原因 (to analyze the cause) and 缺乏经验 (to lack experience) as units.
3. Collect idioms with their stories
HSK 5 is where 成语 start appearing regularly. An idiom is much easier to remember when you know the story behind it, which is why the app's HSK 5 graded readers retell 塞翁失马 (the old man who lost his horse) and 精卫填海 (Jingwei filling the sea).
4. Sample HSK 5 words worth learning early
All of these come from the HSK 5 list in the app.

Key HSK 5 Grammar Points with Examples
These patterns follow the HSK 5 grammar lessons in the Learn Chinese app. Most of them appear more in writing than in speech, so learn to recognize them first and produce them second.
Conditions: 一旦 ... 就 ... and 除非 ... 否则 / 才 ...
一旦 means "once (something happens)". 除非 means "unless" and usually pairs with 否则 (otherwise) or with 才 ("only if... will").
- 一旦养成了习惯,就很难改变。 Yídàn yǎngchéng le xíguàn, jiù hěn nán gǎibiàn. Once a habit has formed, it's hard to change.
- 除非你亲自去,否则他不会同意。 Chúfēi nǐ qīnzì qù, fǒuzé tā bú huì tóngyì. Unless you go in person, he won't agree.
Results and conclusions: 从而, 由此可见
从而 links a method to its result ("and thereby"). 由此可见 introduces a conclusion drawn from what came before.
- 他改变了学习方法,从而提高了阅读速度。 Tā gǎibiàn le xuéxí fāngfǎ, cóng'ér tígāo le yuèdú sùdù. He changed his study method and thereby improved his reading speed.
- 这次考试大部分同学都通过了,由此可见,大家平时的努力没有白费。 Zhè cì kǎoshì dà bùfen tóngxué dōu tōngguò le, yóu cǐ kějiàn, dàjiā píngshí de nǔlì méiyǒu báifèi. Most students passed this exam, which shows that everyone's regular effort paid off.
Choices and preferences: 宁可 ... 也不 ..., 与其 ... 不如 ...
宁可 ... 也不 ... means "would rather A than B". 与其 A 不如 B means "rather than A, it's better to B".
- 我宁可走路,也不想挤公交车。 Wǒ nìngkě zǒulù, yě bù xiǎng jǐ gōngjiāochē. I'd rather walk than squeeze onto a crowded bus.
- 与其在家等消息,不如直接去问问。 Yǔqí zài jiā děng xiāoxi, bùrú zhíjiē qù wènwen. Rather than waiting at home for news, we'd better just go and ask.
Rhetorical patterns: 何必, 何况, 索性
- 这么近,何必打车呢? Zhème jìn, hébì dǎchē ne? It's so close, why bother taking a taxi?
- 这个问题连老师都答不出来,何况我们呢? Zhège wèntí lián lǎoshī dōu dá bu chūlái, hékuàng wǒmen ne? Even the teacher can't answer this question, let alone us.
- 雨越下越大,我们索性不出去了。 Yǔ yuè xià yuè dà, wǒmen suǒxìng bù chūqù le. The rain kept getting heavier, so we simply decided not to go out.
Totality and negation: 凡是 ... 都 ..., 毫无 / 毫不
- 凡是参加比赛的人都可以得到一份礼物。 Fánshì cānjiā bǐsài de rén dōu kěyǐ dédào yí fèn lǐwù. Everyone who takes part in the competition gets a gift.
- 他对这件事毫无兴趣。 Tā duì zhè jiàn shì háo wú xìngqù. He has no interest at all in this matter.
- 她毫不犹豫地答应了。 Tā háo bù yóuyù de dāying le. She agreed without the slightest hesitation.
Notice the 地 in the last example. If 的, 地 and 得 still trip you up in writing, see the three de particles explained.
Formal passive: 为 ... 所 ...
A written alternative to 被, often found in descriptions and reports.
- 这位作家的作品为很多年轻人所喜爱。 Zhè wèi zuòjiā de zuòpǐn wéi hěn duō niánqīngrén suǒ xǐ'ài. This writer's works are loved by many young people.
Our 被 passive guide covers the everyday passive this is built on.
Dates and deadlines: 截至 vs 截止
截至 takes a time after it ("up to"); 截止 usually ends the clause ("to close").
- 截至目前,已经有三百人报名。 Jiézhì mùqián, yǐjīng yǒu sānbǎi rén bàomíng. Up to now, three hundred people have signed up.
- 报名将于五月二十日截止。 Bàomíng jiāng yú wǔ yuè èrshí rì jiézhǐ. Registration closes on May 20.
Connectors from the word list: 毕竟, 随着, 以便
- 别怪他了,他毕竟才学了一年中文。 Bié guài tā le, tā bìjìng cái xué le yì nián Zhōngwén. Don't blame him. After all, he has only studied Chinese for a year.
- 随着经济的发展,人们的生活水平不断提高。 Suízhe jīngjì de fāzhǎn, rénmen de shēnghuó shuǐpíng búduàn tígāo. As the economy develops, people's living standards keep rising.
- 请提前把材料发给我,以便我做准备。 Qǐng tíqián bǎ cáiliào fā gěi wǒ, yǐbiàn wǒ zuò zhǔnbèi. Please send me the materials in advance so that I can prepare.
随着 often pairs with 越来越; see 越来越 and 越...越... for that pattern.
How to Practice Reading, Listening and Writing
Reading: build speed, not just accuracy
- Skim first. Read the first sentence of each paragraph and guess the main idea before you read in detail.
- Follow the connectors. 然而 signals a turn, 因而 and 从而 signal a result, 由此可见 signals the conclusion. Underlining them shows you the structure of the text.
- Don't look up every word. Guess from context and characters, and look up only words that block your understanding or appear more than once.
- Reread. Read a text once for meaning, then again a few days later at a faster pace. Speed comes from familiar words, not from rushing.
Listening: longer input, shorter loops
The app's four HSK 5 dialogues cover launching a new app, green travel, talking with a financial advisor and negotiating with a supplier. They contain the formal vocabulary you meet in this level's reading, spoken at a natural pace.
- Listen to a whole dialogue once for the gist.
- Then work in short loops: one or two lines at a time, transcribing what you hear before checking the text.
- Finish by shadowing the full dialogue.
Writing: paragraphs, not just sentences
Exams at this level have typically included writing a short text from given words or a prompt; confirm the current task types for your exam version on chinesetest.cn. Useful practice either way:
- Pick five words from this week's list and write one connected paragraph that uses all of them.
- Use a clear structure: opinion, two reasons, a conclusion with 总之 or 由此可见.
- Practice difficult characters with stroke order and test yourself with tingxie dictation.
An 18-Week HSK 5 Study Plan
This plan assumes 45 to 60 minutes a day: about 15 minutes of spaced repetition and the rest on reading, listening and writing. At 10 new words a day, the 1,071 new words take about 16 weeks, leaving two weeks for consolidation.
| Weeks | New words | Grammar focus | Reading and listening | Output practice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | about 140 | Review HSK 4 connectors; 毕竟, 随着 | Dialogue: launching a new app | Daily 5-word paragraph |
| 3–4 | about 140 | 一旦...就, 除非...否则 / 才 | Graded reader: 塞翁失马 | Retell the story in your own words |
| 5–6 | about 140 | 从而, 由此可见, 以便 | Dialogue: green travel | Paragraph: opinion plus two reasons |
| 7–8 | about 140 | 宁可...也不, 与其...不如 | Short news summaries on familiar topics | First HSK 5 practice test |
| 9–10 | about 140 | 何必, 何况, 索性 | Graded reader: 精卫填海 | Summarize an article in 5 sentences |
| 11–12 | about 140 | 凡是...都, 毫无 / 毫不 | Dialogue: talking with a financial advisor | Write a formal email |
| 13–14 | about 140 | 为...所, 截至 vs 截止 | Dialogue: negotiating with a supplier | Second practice test |
| 15–16 | the last 90 or so | Review all patterns | Longer authentic articles | Timed paragraph writing |
| 17–18 | reviews only | Weak points from your tests | Reread texts at speed | Timed practice; official sample material if available |
Using Spaced Repetition and the App Effectively
By HSK 5 your review pile is large, so how you use spaced repetition matters more than ever.
- Reviews first, every day. The app's SRS review puts due cards before new words and adds up to 10 new words a day. Skipping a few days makes the backlog grow quickly.
- Use example sentences. For formal words, read the example sentence aloud during review. It reminds you where the word belongs.
- Mark guesses as forgotten. A word you half-know comes back sooner, which is what you want.
- Write the confusable characters. Use writing practice with stroke order for pairs that look alike.
- Check tones on new words. If you misread tones in longer words, a few minutes in the Tone Trainer helps.
- Take practice tests. The app's HSK 5 practice tests have listening and reading questions that show you which skill needs work.
- Add passive exposure. The Word of the Day widget puts a word on your home screen each day.
Common HSK 5 Mistakes
- Mixing registers. Putting 因而 or 加以 into casual chat sounds stiff; using only spoken words in a formal paragraph sounds childish. Notice where you met each word.
- Using 从而 between unrelated ideas. 从而 needs a method or action first and a result second, usually with the same subject.
- Using 截止 like 截至. You will see 截止目前 online, but careful written Chinese uses 截至目前 ("up to now") and keeps 截止 for "to close".
- Mixing up 与其 and 宁可. 与其 A 不如 B prefers B; 宁可 A 也不 B accepts A to avoid B.
- Forgetting 都 after 凡是. The pattern is 凡是...都....
- Reading only with a dictionary. Looking up every word kills reading speed. Guess first, check later.
- Skipping listening. Many learners read at HSK 5 but listen at HSK 4. Keep a daily listening slot.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many words do I need for HSK 5?
Under the New HSK 3.0 word lists used in the Learn Chinese app, HSK 5 adds 1,071 new words, for 4,316 words in total across Levels 1 to 5. The HSK 2.0 list for this level is different, so check which version your exam uses on chinesetest.cn.
How long does it take to go from HSK 4 to HSK 5?
At 10 new words a day, the 1,071 new words take about 107 days. With daily reviews, reading and listening on top, most learners should plan for at least four to five months of steady study, and longer if they study only a few days a week.
Why does HSK 5 feel so much harder than HSK 4?
Mostly because of register. HSK 5 brings in formal written Chinese, such as 从而, 因而, 加以 and 为...所, and much longer texts. The words are less frequent in daily conversation, so you need more reading to meet them often enough to remember them.
Can I pass HSK 5 without studying characters by hand?
Recognition matters most for reading, and whether handwriting is tested depends on the exam version and whether the test is paper-based or computer-based, so check chinesetest.cn. Writing the characters you keep confusing is still one of the fastest ways to fix them.
What should I read to prepare for HSK 5?
Start with graded readers and short dialogues at your level, then move to short authentic texts such as news summaries, product pages and blog posts on topics you know. Choose texts where you already understand most of the words, and reread them.
Should I study the HSK 2.0 or HSK 3.0 word list for HSK 5?
If your exam is soon and uses the 2.0 paper, prioritize the 2.0 list and its sample questions. Otherwise, the 3.0 list is a good long-term choice because it is larger at this level and follows the current standard.
