Present Continuous in Chinese: 在, 正在 and 呢 Explained
To form the present continuous in Chinese, put 在 (zài) or 正在 (zhèngzài) before the verb. You can also add 呢 (ne) at the end. 我在做饭 means "I'm cooking." The verb itself never changes, because Chinese has no "-ing" ending. 正在 adds a sense of "right now," and 呢 makes the sentence sound relaxed and spoken.
This is HSK 1 and HSK 2 grammar that you'll use every day. Below you'll find 在, 正在 and 呢, how to combine them, the negative 没在, the past, 着, 在 as "to be at," and verbs that can't take 在. If you're still building basic word order, start with our Chinese grammar basics for new learners, and see the HSK 2 grammar list for what comes next.
How to Say "I Am Doing" in Chinese: The Quick Answer
You have three tools for the same job: 在 (everyday), 正在 ("right now") and 呢 (casual).
- 我在做饭。
- Pinyin: Wǒ zài zuò fàn.
- English: I'm cooking.
- 我正在做饭。
- Pinyin: Wǒ zhèngzài zuò fàn.
- English: I'm cooking right now.
- 我做饭呢。
- Pinyin: Wǒ zuò fàn ne.
- English: I'm cooking. (casual)
A memory trick: 在 also means "to be at," as in 我在家 (I'm at home). So 我在做饭 is a bit like "I'm at cooking." You're in the middle of it.
Zai Chinese Grammar: 在 + Verb
Subject + 在 + Verb (+ Object)
This is the pattern you'll hear most.
- 外面在下雨。
- Pinyin: Wàimiàn zài xià yǔ.
- English: It's raining outside.
- 他们都在等你。
- Pinyin: Tāmen dōu zài děng nǐ.
- English: They're all waiting for you.
Words like 都 and 也 go before 在.
在 for "These Days"
在 also covers something going on over a longer stretch of time, just like English "I'm learning to drive."
- 我最近在学开车。
- Pinyin: Wǒ zuìjìn zài xué kāichē.
- English: I'm learning to drive these days.
- 他一直在找工作。
- Pinyin: Tā yìzhí zài zhǎo gōngzuò.
- English: He's been looking for a job this whole time.
正在 vs 在: Using Zhengzai in Chinese for "Right Now"
Subject + 正在 + Verb (+ Object)
正 means "just" or "exactly," so 正在 is "exactly in the middle of." Use it when timing matters, like when you're busy and can't talk.
- 我正在开会,一会儿给你打电话。
- Pinyin: Wǒ zhèngzài kāihuì, yíhuìr gěi nǐ dǎ diànhuà.
- English: I'm in a meeting right now. I'll call you in a bit.
One clear difference: 正在 doesn't go with 一直 (all along) or 经常 (often), because 正在 is about one moment. 他一直在找工作 is fine. 他一直正在找工作 is not.
Otherwise, native speakers often use the two almost interchangeably. When in doubt, 在 is safe.
正 + Verb + 呢
You'll also hear 正 alone. It almost always needs 呢 or another clause after it. 我正吃饭 alone sounds unfinished.
- 我正吃饭呢,一会儿再说吧。
- Pinyin: Wǒ zhèng chī fàn ne, yíhuìr zài shuō ba.
- English: I'm right in the middle of eating. Let's talk later.
The Ne Progressive in Chinese: 呢 at the End
Subject + Verb (+ Object) + 呢
In conversation, 呢 at the end of a statement can show an action is going on, even with no 在.
- 别吵,孩子睡觉呢。
- Pinyin: Bié chǎo, háizi shuìjiào ne.
- English: Keep it down. The kid's asleep.
呢 has other jobs too, like 你呢? ("And you?"). The progressive 呢 ends a statement, not a question.
Combining Them: 在…呢 and 正在…呢
In everyday speech, the most natural versions often use both parts.
Subject + (正)在 + Verb (+ Object) + 呢
- 妈妈在做饭呢,你先坐一会儿。
- Pinyin: Māma zài zuò fàn ne, nǐ xiān zuò yíhuìr.
- English: Mom's cooking. Have a seat for a bit.
Roughly, from light to strong: 呢, 在, 正在, 正在…呢. It isn't a strict scale.
How to Say "I'm Not Doing" Something: 没在
Subject + 没(有) + 在 + Verb
The negative uses 没, not 不. If 不 and 没 still trip you up, see our article on 不 vs. 没.
- 我没在睡觉,我在想事情。
- Pinyin: Wǒ méi zài shuìjiào, wǒ zài xiǎng shìqing.
- English: I'm not sleeping. I'm thinking.
- 你在玩游戏吗?没有,我在写作业。
- Pinyin: Nǐ zài wán yóuxì ma? Méiyǒu, wǒ zài xiě zuòyè.
- English: "Are you playing games?" "No, I'm doing my homework."
正在 isn't used in the negative, and 呢 usually drops. One grey area: 不是在 + verb is common when correcting someone. 我不是在批评你 (Wǒ bú shì zài pīpíng nǐ) means "It's not that I'm criticizing you."
Past Progressive: "Was Doing" in Chinese
在 works for any moment you point to, including the past. Chinese doesn't change the verb for tense. Time words do that work.
Time / …的时候,Subject + 在 + Verb
- 昨天我打电话的时候,他在洗澡。
- Pinyin: Zuótiān wǒ dǎ diànhuà de shíhou, tā zài xǐzǎo.
- English: When I called yesterday, he was taking a shower.
- 你进来的时候,我正在换衣服。
- Pinyin: Nǐ jìnlái de shíhou, wǒ zhèngzài huàn yīfu.
- English: When you came in, I was getting changed.
Don't add 了 to a verb with 在, even in the past. 了 says an action is finished, and 在 says it's still going. Our article on 的时候, 以前 and 以后 has more on time clauses like these.
在 vs 着: Action or State?
Both often become "-ing" in English. 在 is an action in progress. 着 (zhe) is a state that lasts.
- 他在穿外套。
- Pinyin: Tā zài chuān wàitào.
- English: He's putting on his coat.
- 他穿着外套。
- Pinyin: Tā chuān zhe wàitào.
- English: He's wearing a coat.
A quick test: can you see movement? Use 在. Is it just how things are now? Use 着. Our guide to the particle 着 goes into more detail.
在 as "To Be At" vs. 在 as "-ing"
Same character, two related jobs.
- 他在图书馆。
- Pinyin: Tā zài túshūguǎn.
- English: He's at the library. (在 as a verb: "to be at")
- 他在学习。
- Pinyin: Tā zài xuéxí.
- English: He's studying. (在 as a progressive marker)
- 他在图书馆学习。
- Pinyin: Tā zài túshūguǎn xuéxí.
- English: He studies at the library. / He's studying at the library.
In the last sentence, one 在 does both jobs, so never write 在在. It can be a habit or a right-now action. To make "right now" clear, add 正 or 呢: 他正在图书馆学习呢.
Verbs That Can't Take 在
在 needs an action you can be in the middle of. Two kinds of verbs don't fit.
State verbs describe how things are, not what someone is doing: 是, 有, 知道, 认识, 喜欢, 觉得. Say 我知道, never 我在知道.
Instant verbs happen in a moment: 到 (arrive), 忘 (forget), and result verbs like 看见 (see) or 听懂 (understand). Use other patterns for these:
- 他快到了。
- Pinyin: Tā kuài dào le.
- English: He's almost here.
- 我在去公司的路上。
- Pinyin: Wǒ zài qù gōngsī de lùshang.
- English: I'm on my way to work.
Here 在 means "to be at": "on the road to work." For more on 快…了, see our article on 快要…了 for "about to".

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you say "I am doing" something in Chinese?
Put 在 (zài) before the verb: 我在做饭 means "I'm cooking." The verb never changes form. You can use 正在 to stress "right now," or add 呢 at the end to sound more conversational.
What is the difference between 在 and 正在?
Both mark an action in progress. 正在 stresses that it is happening at this exact moment. 在 is more neutral and can also describe something that goes on for days or weeks, as in 我最近在学开车.
Can 呢 show an action in progress on its own?
Yes, in casual speech. 他睡觉呢 means "he's sleeping." It is also very common together with 在 or 正在, as in 他在睡觉呢.
How do you say "I'm not doing" something in Chinese?
Use 没在 or 没有在 before the verb: 我没在看电视 means "I'm not watching TV." 正在 is not used in negative sentences, and 呢 usually drops.
What is the difference between 在 and 着 in Chinese?
在 shows an action in progress, like 他在穿外套 (he's putting on his coat). 着 shows a state that lasts, like 他穿着外套 (he's wearing a coat).
