HSK 1 Vocabulary List: All 500 Words with Pinyin and Meanings (New HSK 3.0)

Published

The HSK 1 vocabulary list has 500 words under the New HSK 3.0 standard. These are the words for Level 1, the first level of the Chinese proficiency test. Below you will find all 500 HSK 1 words with pinyin and English meanings, plus the most useful word groups and a simple way to study them.

If you want a step-by-step plan for your first months of Chinese, read our HSK 1 beginner roadmap. This page is the reference list you can come back to while you follow that plan.

What the HSK 1 Vocabulary List Covers

HSK 1 words are the building blocks of everyday Chinese. With them you can:

  • Greet people, say thank you and apologize.
  • Talk about yourself, your family and your friends.
  • Use numbers, prices, dates and times.
  • Ask simple questions: who, what, where, how many.
  • Describe daily routines like eating, sleeping, studying and going to work.

Most of the list is short, common words. You will see many two-character words built from characters you already know. For example, once you know 车 (chē, vehicle), the words 车站 (chēzhàn, station), 车票 (chēpiào, ticket) and 开车 (kāichē, to drive) become much easier.

New HSK 1 vocabulary vs the old HSK 2.0 list

The old HSK 2.0 Level 1 list had 150 words. The new HSK 3.0 Level 1 list has 500 words, so it is more than three times larger. The new list also covers about 300 characters at this level.

This means the new HSK 1 asks for much more than before. Words like 地图 (dìtú, map), 手机 (shǒujī, mobile phone) and 上网 (shàngwǎng, to go online) are now part of Level 1. Most of the old list is still there, so if you started with the 150 words, you mainly need to add new ones. A few old words, such as 苹果 (píngguǒ, apple) and 猫 (māo, cat), now sit at a higher level.

The exam is in transition between the two versions, and the version on offer can depend on your test center and date. Check the current format on the official site, chinesetest.cn. For a full comparison, see our guide to HSK 3.0 vs HSK 2.0.

The Most Useful HSK 1 Word Groups

You do not need to learn the list from A to Z. Start with the groups below. They give you the most speaking power for the least effort.

Greetings and polite phrases

These are the words you will use on your first day.

Word Pinyin Meaning
谢谢 xièxie thank you
不客气 bù kèqi you're welcome
对不起 duìbuqǐ sorry
没关系 méi guānxi it doesn't matter
再见 zàijiàn goodbye
请问 qǐngwèn excuse me, may I ask

Example:

  • 请问,洗手间在哪儿? (Qǐngwèn, xǐshǒujiān zài nǎr?) Excuse me, where is the restroom?

People and family

Word Pinyin Meaning
爸爸 bàba dad
妈妈 māma mom
朋友 péngyou friend
老师 lǎoshī teacher

Add 们 (men) to make a group: 朋友们 (péngyoumen, friends), 我们 (wǒmen, we).

  • 她是我的老师。 (Tā shì wǒ de lǎoshī.) She is my teacher.

Numbers, money and time

Word Pinyin Meaning
几 jǐ how many (small numbers)
多少 duōshao how many, how much
块 kuài yuan (spoken)
今天 jīntiān today
现在 xiànzài now

Use 几 when you expect a small number, and 多少 for prices or larger numbers.

  • 这个多少钱? (Zhège duōshao qián?) How much is this?
  • 现在几点? (Xiànzài jǐ diǎn?) What time is it now?

Words like 块, 个 and 本 are measure words. Our guide to Chinese measure words explains how they work.

Everyday verbs

Word Pinyin Meaning
是 shì to be
有 yǒu to have, there is
去 qù to go
吃 chī to eat
喜欢 xǐhuan to like
想 xiǎng to want to, to think
  • 我喜欢喝茶。 (Wǒ xǐhuan hē chá.) I like drinking tea.
  • 明天我想去北京。 (Míngtiān wǒ xiǎng qù Běijīng.) I want to go to Beijing tomorrow.

Note that 有 is made negative with 没, not 不: 我没有车 (wǒ méiyǒu chē), I don't have a car. See 不 vs 没 for the full rule.

Question words and particles

Word Pinyin Meaning
什么 shénme what
哪儿 nǎr where
谁 shéi who
吗 ma yes-no question particle
呢 ne "and you?" particle
  • 你叫什么名字? (Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi?) What is your name?
  • 我很好,你呢? (Wǒ hěn hǎo, nǐ ne?) I'm fine, and you?

In Chinese, the question word stays where the answer goes. Our Chinese question words guide shows this with more examples.

How to Study the HSK 1 Word List

Use spaced repetition. Learn about 10 new words a day and review them in a flashcard system that shows each card again just before you would forget it. Short daily sessions work better than one long session a week.

Say every word out loud with its tone. A wrong tone can change the meaning: 买 (mǎi, to buy) and 卖 (mài, to sell) differ only by tone. If tones are still shaky, spend a few days on the four Mandarin tones first.

Write the characters. You do not have to write all 500 from memory, but writing a word a few times helps you see its parts. The tingxie dictation method is a simple way to test yourself.

Learn words in short sentences. 吃饭 (chīfàn) is easier to remember inside 我们去吃饭吧 (Wǒmen qù chīfàn ba, Let's go eat) than on its own.

The Learn Chinese app has all 500 HSK 1 words with audio, SRS flashcards and stroke order, so you can practice this list on your phone.

Words that look the same but sound different

A few HSK 1 characters have two readings, and the list includes both. Learn each reading with its own example so you do not mix them up:

  • 还 hái (still): 他还在家。 (Tā hái zài jiā.) He is still at home.
  • 还 huán (to give back): 我明天还你书。 (Wǒ míngtiān huán nǐ shū.) I'll give you back the book tomorrow.
  • 干 gàn (to do): 你在干什么? (Nǐ zài gàn shénme?) What are you doing?
  • 干 gān (dry): 衣服干了。 (Yīfu gān le.) The clothes are dry.

Also watch the two ways to say "two". Use 二 (èr) when counting and in numbers like 十二 (shí'èr, twelve). Use 两 (liǎng) before a measure word: 两个人 (liǎng ge rén), two people.

Full HSK 1 Vocabulary List (A to Z)

Here are all 500 words for HSK 1 in the New HSK 3.0 lists, sorted by pinyin and grouped by first letter. Together with the earlier levels, that makes 500 words.

These counts follow the 2021 HSK 3.0 standard (GF0025-2021). The exam syllabus published in late 2025 is reported to use shorter lists for some levels, so check HSK 3.0 vs HSK 2.0 and the official site chinesetest.cn for the list your exam uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many words are on the HSK 1 vocabulary list?

The New HSK 3.0 Level 1 list has 500 words. The older HSK 2.0 Level 1 list had 150 words. Check which version your exam uses on chinesetest.cn, because the format can depend on your test center and date.

Do I need to write the HSK 1 characters by hand?

You need to recognize them for reading. Whether handwriting is tested depends on the exam version and on whether you take the paper or computer test, so check chinesetest.cn. Writing the words a few times still helps you tell similar characters apart.

How long does it take to learn all 500 HSK 1 words?

At 10 new words a day, the list takes about 50 days, plus daily reviews. Many learners finish in two to three months with about 20 minutes of study a day.

Should I learn the pinyin or the characters first?

Learn them together. Use pinyin to get the sound and tone right, then link that sound to the character. If you only read pinyin, the characters will feel new later, and you will have to learn every word twice.

Is the old 150-word HSK 1 list still useful?

Yes. Most of those 150 words are also on the new 500-word list, so little of what you learned is wasted. If your exam still uses the 2.0 paper, focus on that list first, then fill in the rest.

What's Next
