HSK 3.0 vs HSK 2.0: The New 9 Levels, Word Counts and Start Date

HSK 3.0 vs HSK 2.0 comes down to three things: HSK 3.0 has nine levels instead of six, its word lists are much larger at every level, and it tests more skills, including handwriting, translation and speaking at the top levels. The test organizer has announced that the new exam opens worldwide on 13 December 2026. This guide explains the new structure, the numbers for each level, what changes in the exam papers and which word list you should study now.

Dates and formats can still change, so treat the official site, chinesetest.cn, as the final word on anything to do with registration.

What Is HSK 3.0?

HSK 3.0 is the name learners use for the new Chinese proficiency test built on the "Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education". This standard was published by China's Ministry of Education in 2021 under the code GF0025-2021 and took effect on 1 July 2021.

The standard describes Chinese ability in three bands and nine levels, which in Chinese is called:

  • 三等九级 (sān děng jiǔ jí): three bands, nine levels

For each level, it sets out what you should be able to do, plus lists of syllables, characters, words and grammar points. The exam is then built on top of these lists.

HSK 2.0 is the six-level exam that has been in use since around 2010. Most textbooks, apps and certificates you see today still come from that system.

The Three Bands and Nine Levels

HSK 3.0 groups its levels into three bands:

Band Chinese Levels What it means
Elementary 初等 (chūděng) 1, 2, 3 Simple everyday communication
Intermediate 中等 (zhōngděng) 4, 5, 6 Study, work and daily life on common topics
Advanced 高等 (gāoděng) 7, 8, 9 Academic and professional Chinese

Levels 1 to 6 each have their own exam. Levels 7, 8 and 9 share one combined exam, and your score decides which of the three levels you reach, or whether you fall below Level 7. The combined HSK 7-9 exam has been running since 2022, well before the new Levels 1 to 6.

The level numbers do not line up neatly with the old ones. A new HSK 3 asks for far more words than an old HSK 3, so a "3" on one certificate does not equal a "3" on the other.

HSK 3.0 Word, Character and Syllable Counts per Level

The 2021 standard gives four lists for every level. The table below shows the new items each level adds, with the running total in brackets.

Level Syllables Characters (reading) Words Grammar points
1 269 (269) 300 (300) 500 (500) 48 (48)
2 199 (468) 300 (600) 772 (1,272) 81 (129)
3 140 (608) 300 (900) 973 (2,245) 81 (210)
4 116 (724) 300 (1,200) 1,000 (3,245) 76 (286)
5 98 (822) 300 (1,500) 1,071 (4,316) 71 (357)
6 86 (908) 300 (1,800) 1,140 (5,456) 67 (424)
7-9 202 (1,110) 1,200 (3,000) 5,636 (11,092) 148 (572)

A few things stand out:

  • Words grow steadily. Each of Levels 2 to 6 adds roughly 800 to 1,100 words, so no single level is a huge jump.
  • Characters grow by 300 per level up to Level 6, then by 1,200 across the advanced band.
  • Handwriting has its own list. The standard separates characters you need to recognize from a smaller set you need to write by hand, which reaches 1,200 characters by the top band.
  • Syllables shrink per level. Most of the sounds of Mandarin are covered early, so later levels add fewer new syllables.

The word lists in the Learn Chinese app follow these HSK 3.0 lists: 5,456 words for HSK 1 to 6, split by level exactly as in the table. For the full lists with pinyin and meanings, see our HSK 1 vocabulary list, HSK 2 word list, HSK 3 vocabulary, HSK 4 word list, HSK 5 vocabulary and HSK 6 word list.

The 2025 exam syllabus: a note on smaller numbers

In November 2025, the test organizer published a new HSK exam syllabus, which it says applies from July 2026. Secondary sources that summarize it report lower cumulative word totals for the exam itself than the 2021 standard: about 300 words for Level 1, 500 for Level 2, 1,000 for Level 3, 2,000 for Level 4, 3,600 for Level 5, 5,400 for Level 6 and 11,000 for Levels 7 to 9.

We could not check every figure against the full official document, so read the syllabus on chinesetest.cn before you rely on an exact number. The practical point is simple: the 2021 lists set the larger learning target, while the exam syllabus defines what the paper at each level draws on. If you want to match one specific exam exactly, compare your list with the official syllabus.

HSK 3.0 vs HSK 2.0 Word List Size

Here is how the two systems compare in cumulative words per level.

Level HSK 2.0 words HSK 3.0 words (2021 standard)
1 150 500
2 300 1,272
3 600 2,245
4 1,200 3,245
5 2,500 4,316
6 5,000 5,456
7-9 (no level) 11,092

The gap is biggest at the start. New HSK 1 asks for over three times as many words as old HSK 1, and new HSK 2 about four times as many as old HSK 2. By Level 6 the two lists are close in size, but the new one also spreads its words more evenly across the levels.

This is why the same certificate number can mean quite different things. Someone who passed old HSK 4 with 1,200 words is roughly at new HSK 2 or early HSK 3 in vocabulary terms.

What Changed in the Exam Papers

Official information confirms a few clear changes. Here is what we could verify:

Skills tested by level. Under HSK 3.0, Level 1 tests listening and reading. Writing is added from Level 2 and continues through Level 6. Under HSK 2.0, writing started only at Level 3.

Translation and speaking at the top. The HSK 7-9 exam has five parts: listening, reading, writing, translation and speaking. Translation into Chinese is offered from several native languages, including English. HSK 2.0 had no translation section at all.

Speaking for Levels 1 to 6. Speaking is assessed by a separate test, the HSKK. Under HSK 3.0, reports say the speaking test is matched level by level from HSK 3 to HSK 6, instead of the old three HSKK levels. Whether your school or program requires it is up to them, so check before you book.

Question design. The test organizer says question types, the number of questions, test length and listening speed have all been adjusted. It also says the papers put more weight on Chinese characters and on topics like modern society, technology and culture. Exact section lengths differ by level, so download the official sample papers from chinesetest.cn to see the real format.

Paper and internet-based tests. The first HSK 3.0 session is offered both on paper and online, depending on the test center.

When Does the New HSK Start?

Here is what is confirmed and what is not, as of October 2026.

Confirmed:

  • The 2021 standard has been in effect since 1 July 2021.
  • The HSK 7-9 exam has been running since 2022.
  • A worldwide trial of the new Levels 1 to 6 took place on 31 January 2026.
  • The test organizer announced that HSK 3.0 opens worldwide on 13 December 2026.
  • For that date, paper-based registration closes on 16 November 2026 and internet-based registration closes on 3 December 2026 (Beijing time).
  • Some test centers have confirmed that their October and November 2026 sessions still use the HSK 2.0 papers.

Not yet clear:

  • When the last HSK 2.0 papers will be offered. We found no official end date for the old exam.
  • Whether every test center will offer HSK 3.0 from the first date.
  • The full 2027 test calendar.

Because these details can change, check the announcements and the test calendar on chinesetest.cn, and ask your local test center which version it will run on your date.

What It Means If You Are Mid-Way Through Your Studies

Most learners are not starting from zero. Here is how to decide which list to follow.

Your exam is before 13 December 2026

Stay with HSK 2.0. Your paper will use the old format, so finish the 2.0 list for your level and practice with 2.0 sample papers. Switching now would only add words that will not be tested.

Your exam is on or after 13 December 2026

Study the HSK 3.0 lists. Work level by level, and download the official sample questions for your level so you know the new question types.

You have no exam date yet

Use the HSK 3.0 lists. They follow the current standard, and new textbooks and courses are moving to them.

You passed an HSK 2.0 level already

Your score stays as it is. Do not assume your old level number carries over, though. A good next step is to look at the new list for the same level and see how many words you already know. Many learners who passed old HSK 3 or HSK 4 find they need to go back to new HSK 2 or HSK 3 to fill gaps.

Good news: most of your work transfers

The basic words appear in both systems. For example, 学习 (xuéxí, to study), 朋友 (péngyou, friend) and 因为 (yīnwèi, because) are early words in both. Grammar also carries over. Patterns like the 把 sentence and result complements matter in both, so revising them with our 把 sentence guide is time well spent either way.

Common Mistakes When Comparing the Two Versions

  • Treating level numbers as equal. New HSK 4 needs far more words than old HSK 4. Compare word counts, not level names.
  • Mixing lists. Studying an HSK 2.0 list but booking an HSK 3.0 exam (or the other way round) leaves gaps. Pick one list for one exam.
  • Ignoring handwriting. HSK 3.0 has a separate list of characters to write. Our guide to the tingxie dictation method is a simple way to practice it.
  • Trusting old dates. Earlier articles predicted other start dates for the new exam. Always check the latest announcement on chinesetest.cn.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between HSK 3.0 and HSK 2.0?

HSK 2.0 has six levels and much smaller word lists. HSK 3.0 has nine levels in three bands, larger word lists, separate lists for characters you read and characters you write, and a grammar list for every level. Levels 7 to 9 add translation and speaking to the exam.

When does the new HSK 3.0 exam start?

The official test organizer has announced that HSK 3.0 opens worldwide on 13 December 2026, in paper and internet-based formats. Dates and arrangements can change, so check chinesetest.cn before you register.

How many words are in the HSK 3.0 word list?

The 2021 standard lists 11,092 words across all nine levels, with 5,456 words for Levels 1 to 6. The exam syllabus published in late 2025 gives lower totals for the exam itself, such as 5,400 words by Level 6, so check the syllabus on chinesetest.cn for your level.

Is HSK 7-9 one exam or three?

It is one combined exam. Your score decides whether you are placed at Level 7, 8 or 9, or below Level 7.

I am halfway through HSK 2.0. Should I switch to the HSK 3.0 list?

If you will sit an HSK 2.0 paper soon, finish the 2.0 list and its sample papers first. If your exam is after the switch, or you have no date yet, move to the 3.0 list. Most of what you already know is still useful, because the core everyday words appear in both.

Is my HSK 2.0 certificate still valid?

An HSK certificate is generally accepted for two years from the test date for study purposes. Your old score does not change because the exam changed, but each school or employer sets its own rules, so ask them directly.
